Margaux 2017 has been released at €348 per bottle ex-negociant, down 17% on the 2016 release of €420. It is being offered by the trade at £4,320 per 12×75, a decrease of 17% in sterling terms on the 2016 release of £5,180.

Neal Martin (Vinous) scored the wine 93-95 points. In his tasting note, he commented that “it’s not the bewitching 2015 however, it purrs like a Rolls Royce and will age with panache”.

James Suckling was more generous and awarded 97-98 points. In noted that “this is a very dense Margaux, and especially for the vintage”. He goes on to describe the wine as “luscious and muscular at the same time”.

Liv-ex members also enjoyed this year’s vintage, placing it as their third favourite wine in 2017.

Prices for Margaux are 65% correlated to score. Based on today’s release of £4,320 per 12×75, Liv-ex’s ’fair value’ methodology places the 2017 above the trend line. Followers of James Suckling, however, may find value in this year’s release.

Buyers looking for other options may wish to consider the 2012 vintage. It carries a higher score (96 NM) and is available at a 16% discount to today’s release.
