Leoville Poyferre 2017

Leoville Poyferre 2017 was released today at €54 per bottle ex-negociant, down 18.2% on the 2016 release (€66). It is being offered by UK merchants at the rather ominous figure of £666 per 12×75, a decrease of 16.5% on the 2016 release in sterling terms.

Overall, critics have been positive in their reviews of Leoville Poyferre 2017. Neal Martin awarded the wine 91-93 points noting that it was “a thrilling valedictory Leoville Poyferre (to Didier Cuvelier) who is due to retire this coming July.” James Suckling scored the wine slightly higher at 95-96 points, he called it a “serious encore to the 2016” and wondered if it was the “same level?”.

Today’s opening price is a slight premium to the price implied by Liv-ex’s fair value methodology. Hexakosioihexekontahexaphobics, the term for those who suffer from a fear of the number 666, and buyers searching for more value might consider the higher scoring 2014, which is available at 17.4% discount to today’s offering.
