Calon Segur 2017 has been released at €60 per bottle ex-negociant, down 3.8% on 2016 (€62.4). It is being offered by merchants at £738 per 12×75, though it is already marked as sold out by some.

‘Fair value’ analysis of the release, shown in the chart below, suggests that the 2017 offers better value to collectors than any other recent vintage. It is among the cheapest on the market, with reasonably strong critic reviews.

Writing for Vinous, Neal Martin called the wine “a classy and sophisticated Calon Segur in the making” and scored it 92-94. His colleague Antonio Galloni also called it classy, adding: “In some vintages, Calon Segur speaks loudly. In 2017, the Grand Vin is hushed and yet very expressive.” He scored it 90-93.

Decanter‘s Jane Anson noted its approachability: “The fruit is on the elegant side, and this should be earlier to drink than the 2016 and even the 2014”. She awarded 94 points.

Calon Segur was not affected by spring frosts, but volumes released are down by 25% on last year.

After several sluggish weeks, today’s release of Calon Segur, and yesterday’s release of Pichon Lalande, bring some optimism to the 2017 campaign.
