A sweet start to Bordeaux 2017 – Sauternes releases

By April 24, 2018Bordeaux, Bordeaux 2017

Several 2017s from Sauternes have now been released via La Place. As the table above shows, prices have mostly been flat on last year.

Guiraud, which came out at the beginning of April was the first high profile release of the campaign. It increased its price by 4% on last year in Euro terms. Coutet followed suit and released its 2017 yesterday at a 4.5% increase. Filhot (€15) and Lamothe Guignard (€14.20) also came out yesterday, but their prices remained unchanged.

This morning saw four further releases. Lafaurie Peyraguey (€35), Rayne Vigneau (€31.20), and Tour Blanche (€27.60) all came out at the same price as last year. Sigalas Rabaud (€28) came out at a small 1.4% increase.

Sauternes was one of the areas to suffer the most from last year’s Spring frosts. Climens was hit so badly that it will not be releasing any wine this year. Still, most critics have been positive about the quality of the wine that was produced. In a report on his website, James Suckling commented that “the top Sauternes and a number of dry whites could definitely be on par with the efforts in 2015 and 2016.”
