Guiraud 2017 released ahead of tastings week

By April 4, 2018Bordeaux, Bordeaux 2017

Chateau Guiraud 2017 was released this morning at €31.20 per bottle ex-negociant, 4% higher than the opening price of the 2016 (€30). This makes Guiraud the first major release of the campaign.

The wine is being offered by the international trade for £388 per 12×75, up 11.5% in sterling terms on the 2016 release price of £348 per 12×75.

James Molesworth is currently the only critic to have reviewed the 2017 vintage. In his tasting note he described the wine as “lively, featuring orange peel, white peach, almond cream and apricot flavours that stay juicy and brightly defined”. He added that it was “elegant overall, with power in reserve” and awarded it 92-95 points.

After the devastating frosts that hit the region in April last year, the volume of wine coming to the market is low. The estate produced just 50,000 bottles in 2017 compared to an average of 80,000. In a press release, Guiraud’s Technical Director, Luc Planty, commented that 40% of the vines were affected by the frost.

This year’s Guiraud is entering the market as the second most expensive of vintages. Buyers looking for value may consider the 2009 vintage. It has several years in bottle, 96-points from Neal Martin and is available at a 16% discount to today’s release.
