Spanish releases: Vega Sicilia Unico & Rioja Alta 904

Vega Sicilia, Unico 2006

Vega Sicilia Unico

Vega Sicilia, Unico 2006 is being offered pre-release at £2,340 per 12×75.

James Suckling is currently the only major critic to score the wine. He described this year’s Vega Sicilia Unico as “a wine that you want to spend time with” and awarded it a perfect 100-points.

The 2006 is priced at around the same level as the 97-point 2004, and a touch below the older vintages. Followers of James Suckling may find value in this year’s release.

Vega Sicilia vintages are released when they are ready for drinking. The younger 2007 and 2008 have already been released, and both entered the market before the 2005 which came out last year.

Rioja Alta, Gran Reserva 904 2009

Rioja Alta, Gran Reserva 904 2009 was also released this week at £360 per 12×75.

Tim Atkin MW has awarded the wine 96 points. In his tasting note he commented that the wine “reflect[s] the excellence of the vintage, as well as its power. This is the latest in a superb run of 904 Gran Reservas”.

The wine is priced at around the same level as other recent vintages of Rioja Alta 904, with similar critic scores. Buyers may therefore find reasonable value in the wine.
