Talking Trade – Trade at highest weekly level since June

A busy week on the exchange for Bordeaux’s red wines helped to push the weekly traded value level to a three-and-a-half-month high. Asian merchants comprised the majority of the buy-side, surpassing their previous buying record from the end of September.
The Liv-ex 50 staged a mini-rally, breaking above the 350 mark to close on Thursday at 350.23, up 0.2% on the previous week.

Burgundy’s trade share remains high for the second week in a row. Demand continues to remain strong for wines from Domaine de la Romanee Conti which accounted for over two thirds of the region’s trade.

The recently bottled Carruades Lafite 2015 was the second most traded wine this week. The last trade price of £2,370 represents an impressive 88% price increase since release. Other 2015s to trade recently include Pichon Baron, Pontet Canet, Chasse Spleen and Petit Mouton. On Monday Liv-ex published a short update about the 2015 vintage, including a brief summary outlining where the value currently lies.

Penfolds launch
Penfolds Grange 2013 was released at £4,000 per 12×75 yesterday, marginally above a number of recent vintages already available in the market. Penfolds also launched its latest wine, g3. This wine is a multi-vintage blend of Grange from the 2008, 2012 and 2014 vintages. Although the exact blend is unknown, intrepid home winemakers should note that the combined cost of a bottle from each vintage, assuming the 2014 is roughly the same price, will be cheaper than the blend.
