Yesterday we looked at the 29 Bordeaux reds (2000-2010 vintages) with ‘perfect’ scores from Robert Parker that are available for less than £5,000 per case. At the lower end of this, two 100-point Pontet Canet vintages featured: the 2009 and 2010 have market prices of £1,400 and £1,325 respectively.
Parker has been effusive in his praise of both wines, calling the 2009 “an amazing wine in every sense” and suggesting that 2010 “is a more structured, tannic and restrained version of their most recent perfect wine, the 2009”.
As the charts above and below show, the prices of both wines soared with the excitement of these scores but have drifted since. At peak in March 2013, the 2010 traded at £1,700 per 12×75. It traded this week for £1,261 – down 26%. It is a similar story for the 2009 which reached a peak of £1,800 but last traded at £1,390, a 23% reduction.
Will buyers begin to find value at these reduced prices?
