In June this year, we noted that Mouton Rothschild’s prices were holding while those for the other First Growths had drifted. While they have since dipped, the Mouton index is still showing a 3.1% gain year to date – higher than any of its fellow Premier Crus.

Although just outside the index (which covers 2001-2010), Mouton 2000 is also putting in a strong performance. At over £10,000 per case, the 2000 is Mouton’s most expensive vintage since its 100-point 1982. With 96+ points, it may not be as highly regarded by critics as other recent vintages (2006, 98+; 2009, 99+; 2010, 98+) but its striking black and gold ram label design ensures that it continues to appeal to an Asian market. Last week the wine traded on Liv-ex for £10,300 per 12×75, just £100 off its record high in June 2011.
