Tim Atkin sizes up Bordeaux 2011

Adverse growing conditions affected even the most eminent Bordeaux chateaux in 2011. While the weather got the better of several top Crus Classes, Tim Atkin's 2011 scores, which were published today, suggest that some winemakers managed to overcome the elements.

In total, 14 red wines were awarded more than 95 points, including top-scorer Haut Brion (98) and Cheval Blanc, Mission Haut Brion, Mouton, Leoville Las Cases and Montrose (all 97). More notable, perhaps, are those of the "big eight" that underperformed. Ausone and Lafite were ranked alongside Duhart Milon and Beychevelle at 94 points, while Margaux received a mediocre 93 points. According to Atkin's assessment, Cos d'Estournel (93) also lacked its usual spark.

Below is a snapshot of the critic's 2011 scores, along with those for 2010. The complete set of scores is available on Timatkin.com. A fuller report (costing £10) will be released later this month and will feature tasting notes, analysis and a selection of photos.
