Atkin and Robinson cast first votes for “stars of the vintage”

Masters of Wine Tim Atkin and Jancis Robinson have uncorked another round of 2010 ratings. With the pool of Bordeaux tasting notes growing by the day, a number of potential "stars of the vintage" are beginning to surface. Two contenders for the title are undoubtedly Margaux and Vieux Chateau Certan. The Left and Right Bank heavyweights were the only 2010s to be awarded full marks from Atkin, having already got the nod from James Suckling (100 points each) and James Molesworth (96-99 points each). They are also among Jancis Robinson's most highly ranked wines at 19 and 18.5 points (out of 20) respectively.

Tim Atkin's full notes have yet to be published, but Robinson claims that Margaux "could hardly be more intense", whilst Vieux Chateau Certan was dubbed "the strongest right-bank wine so far…a marvellously intellectual Merlot!"

A selection of the critics' top-scoring 2010s are displayed in the table below. Though Atkin awarded all of the First Growths relatively strong scores, his response to Lafite (97) echoes that of Neal Martin, who claimed that it was overshadowed by its peers.

2010 score comparison

Jancis Robinson has not yet scored all of the First Growths.
