Martin fired up on Pomerol 08

By November 19, 2010Bordeaux, En Primeur, Regions, Releases

This week, Neal Martin published his latest tasting notes on Right Bank Bordeaux 2008. Though several wines from Saint Emilion receive outstanding scores, most notably Cheval Blanc (NM 97), an overriding theme of his latest report is the superlative success of Pomerol.

Martin writes: “Without a question of doubt, Pomerol excelled in 2008. My initial report promulgated its wines and if anything, in bottle they perform even better.”

The new scores see some dramatic upgrades, including Hosanna, which moves up from 89-91 to 93+, Providence, which moves up from 87-88 to 94, and Conseillante, which climbs from 86-88 to 94. It is Petrus, however, that comes closest to perfection.

“The palate is medium-bodied with exceptionally fine balance, linear at first but my God, the back-palate does not know what has hit it…this is one hell of a wine.” – NM 98.

As with the Left Bank, Martin's revised scores reflect a general move upwards, with very few exceptions. The table below shows the top scorers as well as some of the vintage’s most ambitious climbers.
