The super second wines

By August 13, 2010Fine Wine Market

Our recent spotlight on Forts de Latour showed the phenomenal price appreciation that some of the second wines of First Growths have seen in recent months. Not one to be left out, Petit Mouton now appears to be treading the same ambitious path as Carruades and Forts, with a number of vintages seeing strong demand on the exchange.

Spurred on by 2009 prices, perhaps, it is recent vintages of Mouton’s second wine that appear to be most in demand. The 2006 (RP 90) is currently bid at £650 (per 12x75cl case), whilst the 2008 (RP 89-91) is also garnering attention and is bid at £536 per 12x75cl case – up 12% on March. The 2007 (RP 84-87), however, has posted the greatest gains in recent months (much like Forts and Carruades) – rising in value by 50% in just six months, at £618 per 12x75cl case.

Recent vintages of Pavillon Rouge are also seeing similar price movement. Is it time to keep an eye on Clarence (Née Bahans) Haut Brion?
