The latest from the Left Bank

Today saw the release of three major Left Bank wines – Grand Puy Lacoste (€48 p/b), Calon Segur (€51.20 p/b) and Prieure Lichine (€29.75 p/b). All three are up considerably on 2008, with Calon Segur and Grand Puy Lacoste (GPL) releasing at more than double the price of last year. Prieure Lichine has seen the highest increase on 2005, rising by 14%.

So what has the reaction been to the Bordelais’ most recent offerings? Opinion is divided on GPL (RP 91-93), which has been released on a par with the current trading price of 2005 (RP 95) and 2000 (RP 93) despite a not-so-significant Parker score. Calon Segur 2009 (RP 92-94+) carries a similarly daunting price tag, prompting a notable boost in back-vintage trade. The 04 (RP 88-90) and 05 (RP 92) vintages both traded this morning at more than £100 below the latest Calon Segur vintage and continue to look comparatively cheap. Still, anecdotal reports suggest that the latest vintage has, so far, seen strong trade.
