It has now been a full year since we started to calculate the Liv-ex Claret Chip Index on a weekly basis. After a bumpy start, it has been a year of rapid recovery for the Index – which tracks top-scoring First Growths from the last fifteen years. Overall, the index increased 19% and is now just 9% off its all-time high.
The graph above, however, only tells part of the story. If we rebase the index at 100 on 31 December 2008 and track the fortunes of the five Firsts independently, we can see that it was the two Rothschilds, particularly Lafite, that drove the index in 2009. Will 2010 see the other three firsts play follow the leaders?
