Where’s the volume?

By November 21, 2008Bordeaux, Fine Wine Market, Regions

With fine wine now firmly a buyer's market, we thought it would be interesting to see which wines the leading merchants are offering the most of. We have listed the top four by value for you below. (This includes only those wines actively offered by the leading merchants in the UK and Europe).

With both Lafite and Mouton producing more than 20,000 cases of their grand vin, their appearance at the top of the chart is unsurprising – particularly when you consider that even poor vintages trade for in excess of £2,000 a case. The high placing for the 2005s is also somewhat predictable, particularly as we are seeing stock return to the market as traders take profit on the vintage's two-year gains. (Here's Decanter's recent take on the 2005 market).

The third place for the venerable Mouton Rothschild 1986 might come as more of a surprise – although as we highlighted in the October Market Report: "It is a wine of which large volumes are still available despite its 100-point rating from Robert Parker." This goes some way to explain the large drop in price we have seen for the wine on the Liv-ex Fine Wine Exchange. It is now trading some 25% lower than its peak of late last year.

With more than £5 million of stock of the four wines currently available in the market – those who fancy a case for their collection are likely to find some extremely good deals available.
