    Research Analyst

    Company background

Liv-ex (The London International Vintners Exchange) operates the global marketplace for fine wine. Our goal is to make fine wine trading more transparent, efficient and safe for the benefit of our members and the market as a whole. The culture of the company is hard working, committed yet informal, energetic and action oriented.

If you are intellectually curious, commercially minded and articulate, and if you have skills that would lend themselves to being an excellent research analyst and have ambitions to be the pre-eminent expert on the fine wine market, then this opportunity is for you.

    The role

We are looking for someone who is (or has the potential to become) a commercially minded and entrepreneurial research analyst to make the most of Liv-ex's market leading fine wine price data and other insights. The role will suit a candidate who already has some experience of generating analysis, ideas and insight from primary and other sources. A fascination with and a good understanding of the fine wine market will be an advantage.

The role will require you to contribute, develop and build upon Liv-ex's existing daily, weekly and monthly insights as well as more comprehensive reports on the fine wine market such as the Liv-ex Power 100, the Liv-ex 1855 Re-Classification and the Bordeaux Price Guide for Liv-ex Members. You will have responsibility for researching the data, identifying insights and trends, writing and updating reports, dealing with client queries, and working with Liv-ex's management, in-house data, marketing and sales teams. The role will also involve presenting your research and ideas to Liv-ex colleagues, customers and other stakeholders (possibly at industry events).

    Responsibilities

Report research and writing: You will be exploring a wide range of proprietary data sources, including primary and secondary sources to create insightful, relevant reports on the fine wine market.

Insight generation: Both as part of the report writing process and in your interactions with internal and external stakeholders, you’ll need to be able to turn research findings, Liv-ex data and industry knowledge into actionable and commercial insight for trading and investment purposes.

Building relationships with clients, industry figures and the media: Liv-ex members range from merchants, traders, brokers and wine funds in 35 countries. Our data, indices and other insights are widely recognised as industry benchmarks and are closely followed by the wine trade, producers, collectors and the media.

We help clients and other stakeholders to better understand the fine wine market and identify opportunities to profit. Information flows both ways. Liv-ex is the leading source of fine wine price data, but also collects data and insights from third parties such as merchants, auction houses and wine critics. The successful candidate will be expected to draw upon proprietary and secondary sources, such as trade interviews, in order to gain insight into the key issues and drivers of the market. You may also visit clients or attend industry events on an ad-hoc basis to present key findings and insights.

    Tasks

    • The ability to communicate difficult concepts in a clear, engaging and straightforward way, both verbally and in writing
    • Experience in a research-based or analytical role, ideally in B2B markets
    • A high degree of numeracy and intellectual curiosity
    • A fascination for the fine wine market and commercial/ entrepreneurial flair
    • An understanding of markets and basic analysis techniques
    • Secondary research skills: as well as our own data, Liv-ex reports make use of secondary data sources such as customer, critic or industry data
    • A talent for seeing the patterns behind data, and understanding what opportunities these patterns might present for the industry, traders and investors in fine wine
    • Good organisational skills and attention to detail
    • Ability to talk knowledgeably with our internal sales teams about your reports
    • A willingness to present your research to clients in person or at industry events and generally be an outstanding ambassador for Liv-ex
    • Excellent excel, word and power point skills
    • Knowledge of SQL or a desire to learn how to write database queries
    • A willingness to travel
