Sauternes wins again in Jancis Robinson MW’s 10-years-on review of Bordeaux’s 2011 vintage, with châteaux Suduiraut and Rieussec being two of her stand-out wines.

  • Château Suduiraut 2011 was Robinson’s favourite from her recent re-tasting of the vintage.
  • Château Langoa-Barton, Gazin and Haut-Batailley were among her other buying tips.
  • Château Latour was the top-scoring First Growth, with Pichon Baron and Vieux Château Certain also being highly rated.

‘Off-vintage’ Bordeaux and Sauternes were in the spotlight once again following Jancis Robinson MW’s recent re-tasting of the 2011s.

Following Neal Martin’s review of the 20-year-old 2001s and Tom Parker MW’s notes on the 2017s, Robinson re-tasted the 2011s as part of an annual review of each Bordeaux vintage that turns 10.

Like the 2017s, 2011 was a difficult vintage both to make and to sell. Robinson noted that both vintages were ‘two of the least ripe vintages for Bordeaux reds this century’, the other being (presumably) 2013.

‘We were by no means thrilled by the 2011 reds,’ she continued but as with both Martin and Parker said in their reviews of their respective vintages, ‘the indubitable stars of the 2011 vintage were the sweet wines’.

Once again, as in 2017, the cooler growing season which led to less ripe reds proved a boon for the sweet whites.

Praise for Suduiraut and a mention for Rieussec

Robinson added that her ‘favourite’ wine of the entire tasting had been Suduiraut. The wine has a Market Price of £335 (12×75) and is currently offered live at £210 per 6×75 (£420 per 12×75)

Rieussec was another Sauternes label that caught her eye. Its Market Price at present is £360. There are also several live offers available on the exchange.

Away from Sauternes, Langoa-BartonGazinHaut-BatailleyBrane Cantenac and Les Ormes de Pez were other wines from the vintage she advised as buying tips.

Her top-rated wines of the tasting can be seen in the table above.
