Talking Trade – First Champagne house joins La Place

As Château Palmer releases the final stocks of its 2011 wine, another Palmer vintage leads Bordeaux trade by value on the secondary market.

  • Palmer 2011 and Clos des Goisses 2012 see out the La Place autumn releases.
  • Bordeaux’s market share climbed this week while Italy’s, Champagne’s and the USA’s has declined.
  • Bibi Graetz Colore was one of the top traded wines of the week alongside another vintage of Palmer.

The autumn La Place de Bordeaux campaign is now officially behind us with the final release of Château Palmer 2011 “N10” and the debut of Philipponnat Clos des Goisses, which offered its 2012 vintage through four selected négociants.

Champagne was also in the critical spotlight, as The Wine Advocate’s William Kelley released his latest scores on recent and forthcoming releases. You can read a summary of his report here.

We will examine the success of the campaign early next week in a round-up post of the most in-demand wines offered on La Place this year.

Regional share

Bordeaux increased its trade share from 38.6% to 43% in a week of steady market activity. The Rhone (4.1%) and the ‘others’ (4.6%) also gained ground. Australia led the ‘others’ category, taking 2.5% of trade by value, helped by activity around Clarendon Hills 2010 and 2002.

Meanwhile, Champagne, Burgundy, Italy and USA dipped slightly. Italy has enjoyed a sustained broadening of the trade beyond the pillars of Tuscany and Piedmont, which will be the topic of a short report coming soon. This week, Bibi Graetz, Colore was Italy’s most traded wine (LWIN7) by value.

Most traded wines

Bibi Graetz Colore 2016 was the second-most active wine this week, having last traded at £1,844 per 12×75. However, Maison Leroy Meursault Premier Cru Blagny 2005 took the top spot, with a single trade, priced at £7,100 per 12×75.

Palmer 2017 also featured among the top five; as examined yesterday, the vintage offers good value for money. It last traded 4.7% below its current Market Price (£1,940), prior to the re-release of the 2011.
