Le Pin 2020 En Primeur: “Seductive”

  • “Will give the best of itself with at least a decade in bottle,” says Jane Anson.
  • The wine has been released internationally at £24,000 (12×75).
  • The 2020 offers value for those able to get an allocation.

The 2020 Château Le Pin has been released for €1,700 per bottle ex-négociant, up 21.4% on the 2019 release.

The wine is offered for £24,000 per 12×75, 17.2% down on the 2019 current price.

Due to the brand’s strong following and the tight quantities produced, buying power is largely dictated by long term relationships and allocations.

With only Pétrus still to release, the 2020 campaign is effectively at an end.

Critical opinion

The 2020 Le Pin received 96-98 points from Neal Martin (Vinous). “This does not set out to be a powerful Le Pin, but it gently builds to deliver a very precise, quite spicy finish that has very long persistence,” he said.

Jane Anson (Decanter) awarded it 97-points. She commented: “This is a brilliant Le Pin – seductive, with the density and pleasure you expect from this estate”.

James Lawther MW tasting it for JancisRobinson.com gave it 18 points, and also described it as “seductive”. He added that that the wine is “aromatically alluring with zesty red fruit and floral notes and a hint of chocolate from the oak”.

Falstaff found it to be a candidate for a top score, rating it 98-100 points.

Fair Value

The 2020 Le Pin boasts the same Benchmark Critic score as the 2009 and 2018 vintage and thus looks to offer good value.

The 2012 presents a more affordable alternative, with 95-points from Martin and at £22,000 per case.
