  • The new wine offers Fair Value versus the 2019 but the 2018 is available at a slight discount.

Château Sociando-Mallet 2020 has been released at €22.80 per bottle ex-négociant, up 11.8% on the 2019’s opening price.

It is being offered by the international trade for £275 per 12×75. This is down 5.4% versus the 2019’s current Market Price of £291.

The new release offers Fair Value versus other recent vintages. More Fair Value analysis below.

Critical opinion

Neal Martin (Vinous) rated the wine 92-94, noting its “focused bouquet” and “fine-boned tannins”. It is, “a typical Sociando-Mallet, full of grace and power” he continued.

James Suckling (JamesSuckling.com) rated it 93-94, Jane Anson (Decanter) a 92 saying it had both “punch and personality”.

Fair Value

Today’s release price looks well-judged versus Sociando-Mallet’s back vintages. The 2018, 2019 and 2020 wines all have the same score and are three of the estate’s best-rated vintages.

Although positioned at a 5% discount to the current price of the 2019, the 2018 is also 5% less expensive than the 2020.

Sociando-Mallet’s prices have a strong correlation with age. Here the 2017 and 2012 vintages both offer good opportunities.

The 2016 which has a lower score of 92 but is cheaper than the three most recent vintages is another potential wine for buyers to consider.
