Malartic Lagravière 2020 En Primeur: “Ignore at your peril”

  • The red is available for £347 (12×75) and the white for £432.
  • Neal Martin said the red was one of the best he had yet encountered.
  • The new red release looks the best value of the two, the 2019 red also offers value among back vintages.

Château Malartic Lagravière 2020 has been released for €28.80 per bottle ex-négociant, up 9.1% on the 2019’s initial release price.

The red is being offered by the trade for £347 per dozen, up 5.5% on the 2019’s current Market Price. The white is being offered for £432, up 8% on the Market Price of the 2019.

The red looks the best value release of the two. Although slightly more than the 2019, it is priced at an 11% discount to the 2016 which has the same score and 29% discount to the 2010, which also has 95-points. See more Fair Value analysis below.

Critical opinion

Benchmark Critic, Neal Martin, scored the red 94-96. Noting that its fruit was picked before the September rains, he said had a “bright, vivd nose” and was an “aromatically sophisticated Pessac-Léognan”.

“This is one of the best vintages of Malartic Lagravière that I have encountered out of bottle. Ignore at your peril,” he concluded.

He scored the white 92-94 saying it was more defined aromatically than some other whites made in this vintage and “quite delicious”.

His fellow taster at Vinous, Antonio Galloni, scored the red 93-95 (“beautifully taut”) and the white 92-94. Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW rated the red 92-94 and the white 91-93.

Fair Value

The red wine offers Fair Value by our methodology. The 2020, 2019, 2016 and 2010 are the highest-scored wines from this estate.

Of the four the 2019 is the cheapest at £330 per dozen, but the positive score and note from Martin in a strong vintage for Pessac-Léognan make a potentially compelling case.

Buyers might also find opportunities in the 92-point rated 2018, 2017, 2014 and 2012 vintages. The 2014 especially at under £300 a dozen offers the best value of those four, followed by the 2017.
