James Suckling releases Bordeaux 2018 En Primeur scores

“An exceptional year for Bordeaux wines […] Is 2018 a new benchmark for the region?”

James Suckling has just released En Primeur scores in his report “Bordeaux 2018: An exceptional vintage”. Three wines receive the ultimate 100 points, and another eleven a barrel range of 99-100.

Suckling admits: “I didn’t expect this result – a number of people had said that the 2018 was heterogeneous in quality. However, I believe people are confusing the diversity in character and style of the 2018s with quality.”

He describes his top-scoring wines – Lafleur, Petrus and Mouton Rothschild – as “breathtaking”, showing “an incredible depth of fruit and complexity as well as great structure and richness”. Moreover, he presumes that “there could be 10 other wines rated 100 points after bottling”.

On the topic of buying appetite, Suckling suggests that “even if Bordeaux doesn’t sell a lot of wine as en primeur, the beautiful vintage will sell one day in bottle”.

All of Suckling’s top-scoring wines can be found in the table above, as well as on our critic scores page. You can also read Roger Voss, James Molesworth and Jean-Marc Quarin’s thoughts on Bordeaux 2018.
